| Project Name | South Africa Rural Power Grid Upgrade and Industrial Supporting Power Supply Project |
| Cooperation Entities | A provincial power company in South Africa, TSTY (Tiansheng Electric) |
| Project Objectives | Address power supply instability caused by outdated rural power grids in some areas of South Africa. Provide stable medium-voltage power support for emerging industrial parks to meet the dual load demands of local industrial production and residential electricity use. |
| Core Supplied Equipment | 500 units of 33kV-35kV oil-immersed power transformers; 8×40ft containers of 2*1.5mm PVC-insulated twin earth wire cables; 8×40ft containers of single-core cables |
The transformers cover a capacity range of 30kVA to 10000kVA, enabling flexible adaptation to different scenarios. Small transformers (30kVA-500kVA) are deployed at scattered rural distribution points, converting 33kV high voltage to 0.4kV low voltage to meet daily electricity needs such as residential lighting and household appliances. Large-capacity transformers (1000kVA-10000kVA) are configured for industrial parks, providing continuous power supply for high-power equipment like production lines and machinery. Customized for Africa’s high-temperature and dusty environments, the transformers feature low loss and high durability, complying with IEC international standards to withstand complex outdoor operating conditions in South Africa. Multiple voltage combinations and connection groups (e.g., 33/0.4kV, 35/0.4kV) are available, with no-load voltage regulation to flexibly adjust for local power grid fluctuations and ensure stable power supply.
The 2*1.5mm PVC-insulated twin earth wire cables meet IEC 60502 and other international standards. The yellow-green dual-color insulation facilitates identification, adapting to the grounding needs of transformers and distribution equipment to reduce leakage risks. They are mainly used for wiring around transformers and safe grounding of rural distribution lines. The 8 containers of single-core cables are primarily used for 33kV-35kV main transmission lines. Cooperating with transformers, they form a complete transmission link from regional substations to rural distribution points and industrial parks. Copper conductors ensure efficient current transmission, while PVC insulation resists outdoor moisture, ultraviolet radiation, and other corrosive factors.
TSTY customized the transformers to meet South Africa’s power grid standards, with products passing local relevant tests. The company has a service center in South Africa to provide installation, commissioning, and after-sales maintenance. The insulating oil used in the transformers offers excellent heat dissipation and insulation performance, enabling long-term operation in South Africa’s high-temperature environment and reducing downtime due to faults.
After project completion, the power supply reliability of covered rural areas has increased by over 80%, resolving frequent power outages. Industrial parks achieve 24/7 continuous production through large-capacity transformers and stable cable transmission, driving local employment and industrial output growth. The energy-saving transformers feature significantly lower no-load and load losses compared to local outdated equipment, reducing power waste during long-term operation and aligning with South Africa’s green transition goals in the power industry.
This project is a typical case of TSTY’s deep cultivation in the African market. Similar to projects in South Africa participated by enterprises like Shandong Electric Power Equipment, it promotes the large-scale application of Chinese power equipment in South Africa. It provides a referenceable equipment configuration and cooperation model for subsequent power grid renovation projects in other African countries.
